Men Unloading Grain from a Truck

From March 29th to April 2nd is Stand Up 4 Grain Safety Week! Did you know that every year, hundreds of employees are injured or die from preventable hazards while working in grain storage and handling? In the United States in 2019, there were 38 grain entrapments, which is a 26.7% increase over 2018. Also in 2019, 58.2% (or 39) of these cases were fatal.

Here in Union County, we have a lot of grain handling facilities, which are facilities that may receive, handle, store, process, and ship bulk raw agricultural commodities like corn, wheat, and soybeans. So this includes farms with silos, grain bins, and grain elevators, feed mills, and many more operations in the county. In 2020, there was an incident on a farm in Union County where a grain elevator accident caused a worker to lose a leg. This is an important topic, and it can happen on your operation.

This safety stand up is for employers, workers, producers, suppliers, customers, or any others that are associated with an operation that has one of these grain storage facilities. For more information and to learn how to participate, go to Stand Up 4 Grain Safety or contact Mikayla Graham at 704-441-2624.
