The most recent Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) regulation was published in 2015. The purpose of this regulation was to develop oversight of certain animal drugs and medicated feeds between veterinarians, clients and patients, while also reducing the unnecessary use of certain drugs in animals to slow or prevent the potential for antimicrobial resistance.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released a revised Q&A guidance document addressing the VFD regulation. The document addresses a number of components, including:- VFD drugs,
- Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD),
- Information on the VFD,
- VFD transmission and recordkeeping, and
- Involved parties (veterinarian, distributor, client).
